We received from our family the ideas by which we live as well as the disease by which we die

Naples 1980s

The story of a family from the children's childhood to separation and reconciliation.

Rather than betrayal, better to speak of disruption of loyalty says Domenico Starnone from whose novel of the same name the film is based.

An unknown rather than interrupted loyalty seems to be the one between the protagonists of the story, a loyalty on paper, mentioned by a pact, superficial like many family stories.

A formality that works that of affections as long as it works.

With all the consequences of choices, of what is said, more than the unsaid.

Betrayals, resentments, spitefulness, violations, omissions, secrets.

Childish and irresponsible fatherhoods, immature and unfinished motherhoods.

Deprivation and identity theft is the legacy handed to children raised in captivity with unpredictable and irreversible consequences.

Children as children love their parents. Once they grow up they judge them. Rarely, not to say never, do they forgive them

Luchetti enacts Starnone's tale: the stereotype of the contemporary family and beyond, a product of the project of a society that sees consanguinity as the fertilizer of human perversions most functional to unhappiness and thus control.

The first half of our lives is ruined by our parents, the second half by our children
