LA VENARIA REALE
La Venaria Reale

Review by Beatrice

Restored to the Baroque magnificence it was inspired by in the mid-17th century by Duke Carlo Emanuele II of Savoy, the Reggia di Venaria is a vast monumental complex on the outskirts of Turin, now a symbol of modernity and culture.
Its inauguration, which took place in October 2007 after two centuries of abandonment and decay and eight intense years of restoration, was the final stage of the recovery project of Venaria Reale: promoted by the European Union and overseen by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism and the Piedmont Region, it was considered the largest cultural heritage restoration project in Europe. Since its opening, La Venaria Reale has become one of the most visited cultural sites in Italy.
La Venaria Reale is a large, permanent cultural project offering opportunities for knowledge and cultural enjoyment: an open court for all, offering a discovery of multiple experiences, training activities, exhibitions, and events, capable of providing the Italian and international public with pleasures of art, history, and architecture in an extraordinary natural landscape context.
The monumental building, covering 80,000 square meters, boasts some of the highest expressions of universal Baroque: the enchanting setting of the Sala di Diana designed by Amedeo di Castellamonte, the solemnity of the Galleria Grande and the Cappella di Sant’Uberto with the immense complex of the Scuderie, 18th-century works by Filippo Juvarra, the opulent decorations, the famous Bucintoro, and the spectacular Fontana del Cervo in the Courtyard of Honor represent the ideal frame for the Teatro di Storia e Magnificenza, the exhibition route dedicated to the Savoys that guides the visitor through almost 2,000 meters, between the basement and the main floor of the Reggia.
Viewed from above, the Reggia and its Gardens create a space of 950,000 square meters of undivided architecture and parks and serve as the hub from which the large exhibition complexes of the Juvarrian Stables, the Rooms of the Pages, and the Rooms of the Arts, the Conservation and Restoration Center (located in the 8,000 square meters of the former Alfieri Stables), the ancient town Borgo, the Castello della Mandria, and the Cascina Rubbianetta unfold, all within the horizon of the more than 6,500 hectares of green in the nearby Parco La Mandria.
The Gardens today present a close combination of ancient and modern, a virtuous dialogue between historical artifacts and contemporary works, all framed in an infinite vision: with 17th-century caves, the remains of the Fontana dell'Ercole and the Temple of Diana, the Peschiera, the Gran Parterre, the Allees, the Flower and Rose Gardens, the attraction of Fantacasino, the largest Potager Royal in Italy, which has no analogues among Italian gardens for the magnificence of the perspectives and the vastness of the natural panorama surrounded by the woods of Parco La Mandria and the mountain chain of the Alps.

The conditions of the 80 hectares of the area, still at the threshold of the 2000s, were such that it was no longer even possible to perceive the fragments of the original 17th-century garden configuration: a complex restoration project has allowed, over eight years, an unprecedented operation, the actual reconstruction of a landscape with its historical signs, but also with a particular attention to aesthetics and modern enjoyment with the insertion of over 170,000 new plantings and important artworks by masters such as Giuseppe Penone (Il Giardino delle Sculture Fluide and Anafora) and Giovanni Anselmo (Dove le stelle si avvicinano di una spanna in più).
La Venaria Reale, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is ideally located at the center of the Savoy Royal Residences of Piedmont and is connected with the museum system of Turin.
La Venaria Reale is not a destination for a simple visit but a place to spend at least a day due to its various attractions and services, including cafes, a bookshop, refreshment points, an excellent restaurant, conferences, exhibitions, educational and training activities, venue rentals, and accessibility for people with disabilities.
The complex La Venaria Reale “Reggia, Giardini e Castello della Mandria” is managed directly by the Consortium of the Savoy Royal Residences (formerly “Consortium for the Cultural Promotion of La Venaria Reale”) established by the Ministry of Culture, the Piedmont Region, the City of Venaria Reale, the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, and the Fondazione 1563 for Art and Culture.
The Consortium grants management autonomy to La Venaria Reale by presenting a modern administrative profile and model, aiming to involve, in promotion and enjoyment, the entire system of the Savoy Royal Residences of Piedmont.

It is located at the Reggia di Venaria - Piazza della Repubblica 4 - 10078 Venaria Reale (Turin) - tel. +39 011 4992300 – www.lavenaria.it.
